Dental implants in Parma Heights integrate with the jaw bone.Dental implants in Parma Heights–you’ve heard of them, but what are they, and who can get them? Dr. Vladimir Khramoy, implant dentist in Parma Heights, places innovative tooth replacements in qualified teens and adults who are missing one or more teeth due to trauma, decay or gum disease. Known for their stability, longevity and realistic appearance and function, dental implants could be your best choices to fill unhealthy and unattractive smile gaps. The team at Advanced Dental Center would be happy to show you more about them.

Dental Implants are True Artificial Teeth

Unlike partial dentures, full dentures or fixed bridgework which rest on top of the gums, dental implants actually reside right in the patient’s jaw bone. Made up of three parts–a titanium metal screw, a metal alloy extension or abutment and a lifelike porcelain crown–the dental implant appears and acts like a real tooth. In fact, patients report that their implants feel so natural that they cannot tell their real teeth from their prosthetic ones.

How Dental Implants are Placed

To determine if a patient can receive a dental implant, Dr. Khramoy first examines the proposed implant site and the surrounding teeth and gums. He takes X-rays and other kinds of modern imaging to be sure that the jaw bone is strong enough to accept the implant device.

Then, during an in-office oral surgery, the dentist incises the gums and drills a small hole in the jaw bone. He places the titanium implant into the bone and closes the site with sutures.

During the next several weeks, something amazing takes place. It’s called osseointegration, a natural healing and bonding process in which the jaw bone melds with the titanium implant. After the healing period, the patient returns to Advanced Dental Center for placement of the extension post and porcelain crown.

Other Uses of Dental Implants

Dr. Khramoy may recommend multiple dental implants to support multi-tooth bridgework (replacing several teeth in a row) or full dentures. The advantages of these prosthetics include preservation of jaw bone density and natural feel, function, and appearance. Additionally, they avoid the slippage, speech and eating problems associated with traditional tooth replacements, particularly conventional full dentures.

The Success of Dental Implants

Dental implants are amazingly successful, and that’s why Dr. Khramoy and his team enjoy placing them and seeing the results. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons says that dental implants have an overall success rate of 95 percent, meaning the procedures are highly successful and the prosthetics, well-retained. In fact, an implant is likely the last tooth replacement the patient will need.

Why are they so successful? Osseointegration is part of it, but in addition, implants cannot decay, and if they are brushed and flossed just like real teeth, gum disease is not a problem. However, implant patients are encouraged to quit smoking as cigarettes, along with poor oral hygiene, can cause destructive peri-implantitis which resembles advanced gum disease.
