Three Tips to Help You Prevent Dental Emergencies

While spending time at the dentist’s office can be an opportunity to take care of yourself, most people hope that they’ll never need to see their dentist for an emergency appointment.

Ideally, you could go through your entire life without ever having a dental emergency, but that can be easier said than done. If you want to protect your smile, here are a few things that you can do.

Be Vigilant

Most dental emergencies don’t appear all of a sudden; they’re the result of a long decline in oral health, or they come from a gradual weakening of a restoration or oral appliance. That means that you could potentially save yourself an emergency trip to the dentist’s by catching problems before they become serious.

Be conscientious about your oral health, and if you think that something may be off, let your dentist know.

Protect Yourself

There are also a fair amount of dental emergencies that can happen suddenly as a consequence of trauma, especially if you’re an athlete. That’s why it’s critically important for people who play sports to get a professionally crafted sports guard that can protect them should something go wrong.

There are over-the-counter sports guards you can buy, but these are likely not to fit as well as you would like, and could potentially fail when you need them most. By getting your dentist to make you a mouthguard fit specifically to your teeth, you can prevent any chips and cracks that come about because of sports.

Keep Up Your Teeth

Finally, you can prevent dental emergencies by ensuring that your teeth are as strong as possible. The best way to do that is to have a strong dental hygiene routine, including brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using an antibacterial mouthwash to break up bacterial formations.

You should also see your dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings to ensure that your oral health is where it needs to be.
